4th period pass

ThePrivilege

Knock · Check the frame · Log it · Back at the bell

This is how a third of the book gets photographed. And it’s the privilege we could lose for good.

The privilege

Knock. No tests. Back at the bell.

One teacher complains to an AP, and it’s over for everyone.

Instructions

One thingKnock first. Never take photos of a test. Be back when the bell rings.

During 4th period, you can walk around campus with a camera. Almost nobody else at this school gets to do that. Use it well.

  1. Check the week. Workshop week and checkpoint week, everyone stays in the room. Design stays in every week. Outreach + Photo goes out. Content splits.
  2. Check out a camera in #yb-equipment. Your name goes on it.
  3. Knock. Ask the teacher. Don’t just walk in.
  4. If they say no, leave. Write it in the log so nobody else asks them again that week.
  5. Check everything in the frame before you press the shutter. Never a test, a quiz, a screen, or a whiteboard.
  6. Write down what you shot and where: class, teacher, period, roughly who.
  7. Come back when the bell rings. Not after.
  8. Check your work: your name is in the gear log, the shoot is in the shoot log, and you were in your seat at the bell.

What it should look like

A 4th period shoot that keeps the privilege alive looks like this.

Five stops in one period. Every one of them is a rule, not a suggestion.
  1. Leave with a camera that has your name on it in the gear log.
  2. Knock and ask. A no is fine. A no gets logged so the teacher isn’t asked twice.
  3. Shoot with the frame checked first. Nothing on a desk, a screen, or a board that shouldn’t be in a yearbook.
  4. Log it and be back before the bell. The card goes into the Pipeline the next class.

Visual guide

Who goes out, and when nobody does.

  • Design
Stays in the room. Every week. Pages don’t build themselves in the hallway.
  • Outreach + Photo
Goes out. This is your shoot window, your booth window, your ASB window.
  • Content
Splits. Whoever is filming goes out. Whoever is editing stays.
  • Workshop week
    Everyone stays in.
  • Checkpoint week
    Everyone stays in.
fine
a chem lab mid-experiment, teacher said yes, nobody’s test on a desk

Academics pages depend on exactly this.

over for everyone
a whiteboard with the quiz answers
a screen with a grade on it
walking in without knocking

One complaint to an AP ends the privilege for the whole class. Forever.

Lesson

Why this isn’t just a perk

This is how a third of the book gets photographed. Classes only happen during the school day, and 4th period is the only time a student with a camera can get into someone’s chemistry lab. Academics, electives, AVPA, and CTE pages all depend on it.

Why it has the most rules

If we lose Friday games, it doesn’t cost much. But we lose the right to walk around campus forever the first time someone wanders off, films something they shouldn’t, or walks into a room during a test. One teacher complains to an AP, and it’s over for everyone. That’s why this privilege has the most rules, not the fewest.

Cover everyone while you’re out there

You can only walk into classes that meet during 4th. So the log tracks what period you shot, and Cover Everyone fills the gaps from other periods on purpose.

The pass is
  • Knocking, asking, leaving if it’s a no
  • A camera with your name in the log
  • Back in your seat at the bell
  • What you shot, written down
The pass is not
  • Wandering
  • Filming a friend’s class as a joke
  • A test, a quiz, a screen, a whiteboard in frame
  • Being late back because the shot was good
Privileges in this room

Privileges can be requested, granted, and pulled. The 4th period pass and Friday games are the two big ones. Doomscrolling or too much gaming pulls both.

Example

A shoot log entry that keeps a teacher saying yes.

Priya S · Tue Oct 20 · 4th period
Rm 214 Chemistry, Ms. Alvarez, 2nd section · asked at the door, yes
18 frames, titration lab, four groups · checked frames: no papers, no screens
Back 1:50. Card → pipeline Wed.
(Rm 118 English: asked, NO this week. Logged so nobody asks again until Monday.)
Why this gets a 5

Knocked. Logged the yes and the no. Checked the frames and said so. Back before the bell with time to spare. The no is on the log, so the English teacher doesn’t get asked three times this week and start complaining.

How to turn it in

How to turn it inCheck out, log, check in

The pass is turned in through #yb-equipment (camera out, camera in) and your daily report (what you shot, where). The photos follow the Pipeline.

  1. Out: your name on the camera in #yb-equipment.
  2. Shoot log: class, teacher, period, what. Yes or no at the door.
  3. In: camera back, logged, before the bell.
Open #yb-equipment ↗ Every 4th period shoot. Back at the bell, every time.
